| The Nanjing Tai Dong Seminary choir that provided FEBC with music for its broadcasts. The director David K. Shao (Shao Kuang) [See #408 and #151]] is in the rear (glasses). This photo appears in the April 1948 "Broadcaster" publication which includes a summary of CCBS activities in China. By the end of 1947 FEBC had 6 hours of broadcasts on XGOA, the government station, with local broadcasts in Shanghai and Nanking (Nanjing). We had just been granted time also on two SW frequencies. "XGOA" was the "Central Broadcasting Station." There was also an FEBC-sponsored broadcast on a "Ginling" station in Nanjing (XLAW), produced in cooperation with the Lutheran Mission, China Inland Mission (Today OMF), and InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. FEBC was called CCBS, Chinese Christian Broadcasting System. Recording equipment provided by CIM, but mainly used by FEBC. The chorus in the photo was associated with the Tai-Tung [Tai Dong]Theological Seminary. Back of photo has a partially obliterated description: "CCBS Ch[orus?].... XLA.... Center left......ow-kwan All...are co[mmitted?] Christians. " The "ow-kwan" is undoubtedly referring to David K. Shao (Shao-Kuang), the choir's director who appears, in fact, center left. (See also #408). "XLA-" is undoubtedly XLAW. The actual schedules were published in a 1948 calendar (#890). Year: 1947 Country: CHN Set: 12 Updated: 2006-12-13 20:09:07

| QSL cards from XGOA and its companion XORA.. We obtained these on a DXer website. They are from 1947, the very time FEBC was broadcasting on "two SW freqs," and, locally in Shanghai and Nanking. By combining information in the January, 1948 "Broadcaster" brochure, along with information found in a calendar giveaway (#407, 890-1) we have been able to reconstruct most of the schedule (see image 890). According to the "Broadcaster" FEBC began on these SW frequencies on October 19, 1947. Year: 1947 Country: CHN Set: 12 Updated: 2008-06-19 13:31:53

| Our first Overseas Chinese broadcasters in 1949! Will Schubert was a missionary in Chungking, China who fled when the PRC was declared. We are not sure what mission he was with. He came to Manila and did broadcasts there for a while, then returned to China! He was placed under house arrest, but eventually they let him go and he came back to Manila again. They say his Mandarin was not that perfect, but his heart so great that it moved Chinese listeners to tears. He did the broadcast with a Chinese "secretary," who apparently read Scripture passages and helped him with his Chinese! This photo was taken in the 1950's when he returned the second time. Dr. Robert Bowman has a story of a Medical Doctor he met in Hong Kong, who became a Christian listening to him. The doctor said that his Chinese was poor, but "something" in his spirit made him keep listening. Year: 1954 Country: PHL Set: 7 Updated: 2008-08-31 12:00:57

| A "Portable Missionary (PM)" box. The woodworker in the CRCM woodshop made the boxes of mahogany - the standard and most popular wood for construction of just about anything, in the Philippines. The "grille" was hand-sawn with a coping saw from masonite. Now the workers in the middle section of the shop would insert the electronics, generally to receive one or several of the FEBC stations. The idea to construct the radios came when it became apparent after DZAS's sign on in mid-1948, that many people within reach of DZAS did not have electricity or radios. It turned out to be one of FEBC's most successful programs. Year: 1950 Country: PHL Set: 1 Updated: 2006-03-19 21:49:42

| "Gospel and Song" was a Christian radio program produced at the Calvary Assembly church in Inglewoood, California. As can be noted in the text, the program had started in 1933-34, under the leadership of Robert Bowman, and William J. Roberts, pastor of the church. Both of these men, were, of course two of the three original members of FEBC's Founding Executive Committee. It was from this radio effort and the Haven of Rest radio program [see #00063] that Dr. Bowman had gathered his radio experience and his belief in its power to reach people. It was also the principal means by which people across American learned about the new radio venture called Far East Broadcasting Company. (Note: Ralph Carmichael, the well-known composer/conductor eventually took over Dr. Bowman's responsibilities with this program). Year: 1946 Country: USA Updated: 2008-06-19 13:33:49

| In early 1947, FEBC launched a radio program for release in North America called "The Call of the Orient." Its purpose was to heighten awareness of the new radio organization. Its method was to find radio stations throughout America that would air the program on a sustaining basis. The program featured missionary stories, gospel messages, as well as music. The photograph shows Ralph Carmichael directing the FEBC orchestra while on the left Robert Bowman and John Broger wait for their cues. Year: 1947 Country: USA Updated: 2006-03-19 21:52:09

| A very high quality photograph of a home in the Philippines where a "Portable Missionary"(PM) has been placed. The PM's knobs on the front allow for "on" and "off" and tuning. The home is probably in the Pampanga/Zambales area, since it appears Ayta tribespeople are present (on the right); the antlers suggest mountains nearby. The traditional Filipino Christmas Star is hanging, indicating it is Christmas time. Possibly around 1953. Year: 1953 Country: PHL Set: 3 Updated: 2008-08-26 20:33:33
